National Trails Day- Bastrop

Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce:  Free to the public. Meet at the Gazebo in

down town Smithville, TX  www.smithvilletx.org

 

10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.- Guided Historic Walking Tour.  Trails don’t just

occur in the woods.  Discover the history of a classic Texas town while hiking on urban trails.  Guides will take you on a journey through time as told by the architecture, trees, citizens and movies that were filmed in the area.  This is a great, low impact hike with a lot to offer.

 

 

Colorado River Refuge and Lost Pines Nature Trails and River Access Point:-

Information tent for- hikers, bikers, birders, and kayakers to find out more information

about the park, Wilbarger and El Camino Real Paddling Trail and upcoming events.

The Colorado River Refuge offer 3 miles of hiking that are ideal for birding or just

enjoying the banks of the Colorado River.  This is also a take out point for kayaks and

canoes.

Bastrop is only 30 miles east of Austin on Hwy 71.  Come discover what makes the Lost Pines Region an outdoor enthusiast paradise!  There are over 80 miles of hiking,

biking, equestrian and paddling trails in Bastrop County.

Bastrop State Park- 3005 Hwy 21 E., Bastrop TX 78602. Hikes are free with valid

entry. 10 miles of hiking trails. Children 15 years of age and under must be accompanied

9:00 a.m.-        Hablamos Espanol- Spanish Speaking Nature Walk- moderate- families welcome.  This is a moderate hike for Spanish Speaking families.  Guests will learn about the flora and fauna of the majestic lost pines forest and discuss the human history of the park.  Meet at 9:00 am at the group picnic area at Bastrop State Park.

 

9:30 a.m.-        Hike the Lost Pines- 4 mile Ranger guided hike- advanced 

Take a hike deep into the lost pines and discover what’s beyond the front country hikes.  On this hike guests will learn about the forest, endangered species of the area, and discuss the cultural history of Bastrop.  Hikers will be treated to a walk along the historic Goitier Trace that helped define Texas History.  Guests should bring water, a lunch, sunscreen, sturdy foot wear and a hat.  Meet at 9:30 am in the Refectory parking lot at Bastrop State Park.

 

10:00 a.m.-      Discover the Lost Pines- Master Naturalist guided hike- moderate- families welcome. Take a short hike with the Bastrop Master Naturalist and learn about everything that lives, crawls and slithers in the forest of Bastrop State Park.  Meet at 10:00 am at the play ground at Bastrop State Park.

 

9:00 a.m. -       Trail work party and trail building event with American Youth Works- E-Corp.  Volunteers of all ages welcome! Trail work is a great way to give back to the parks you enjoy and get some exercise. This event will be from 9am to noon. www.americanyouthworks.org or call Trails Across Texas-Field Coordinator, Erick Hetzel (512)-658-0147.  Meet at 9:00 am at the Refecory parking lot in Bastrop State Park. Please be sure to bring work gloves, sun screen, water, a snack and be ready for some fun!

 

Buescher State Park- 100 Park Road 1E, Smithville TX 78602. Hikes are free with valid

entry. 7 miles of hiking trails. Children 15 years of age and under must be accompanied

by an adult.

 

6:30 p.m.-        Explore the Pine Gulch guided hike- 2 mile- moderate- families welcome.

                        Guests will experience on of the best kept secrets of Buescher State Park!

   Hikers and families should ask at the front gate about where to meet on the day of the hike.

Family Nature Quest

10 am-1 pm, FREE, all ages

Hikes are one hour and leave from Visitors’ Center at 10 am and noon

Come to the park for a fun family hike as a naturalist guides you along one of our many beautiful trails. We’ll bring together a unique blend of natural history to describe how land and water stewardship is critical to animal, plant and human life along the Colorado River.  Pre-registration is recommended for hikes. Hikes are limited to the first 20 participants and are designed to include families with children of all ages. Clubs or groups should schedule a private hike.

Card Cache Scavenger Hunt

11 am- noon, FREE, all ages

Get a team together and come practice your map-reading skills to find hidden “caches”–or hidden boxes.  Teams will gather clues from the caches to answer a riddle as well as taking a playing card.  The teams with the correct answers and the highest hand wins a fun prize. Fun for the whole family!

Nighttime Nature Walk

9– 10:30 pm, FREE, all ages

Join a McKinney Roughs naturalist to experience nature at night! Call out for Eastern Screech Owls and look for the eye shine of spiders along the trail. Hikers hone their listening skills and learn how nocturnal animals see in the dark. Use night vision goggles to discover nighttime nature as you stroll through the hushed wild and listen to the critters active after dark. Pre-registration is required.

LCRA: North Shore Park- 603 FM 1441, Bastrop TX 78602. Hike/ event is free with

valid entry. 7 miles of biking and hiking trails, plus fishing and boat access to Lake

Bastrop. www.lcra.org

10:00 a.m., Noon and 2:00 p.m.-  Children’s Hike and Fish! This is a really fun, short  

nature walk that ends up with fishing from the floating bridge.  Kids will learn about all the life that swims, slithers and flies around the lake.  Supplies provided by LCRA.
